Today a song marked a century and a half. The song’s journey from a poem written in Bengal to a national symbol that inspired millions during India’s freedom struggle. Yes you all guessed it rightly,
It's our national song:
"Vande Mataram".
“Vande Mataram” was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in Sanskrit and Bengali on 7 November 1875. He was one of India’s greatest writers and is often called the “Sahitya Samrat” (Emperor of Literature) of Bengal. He was among the first graduates of the University of Calcutta and also served as a Deputy Magistrate under British rule.
The song praises Mother India as a divine mother figure.
It was later included in his famous novel Anandamath (1882). It became a source of inspiration during India’s freedom struggle. Freedom fighters often sang it at rallies and protests to express patriotism.
The British government once banned its public singing during colonial rule. The song’s first two stanzas were later adopted as the National Song of India. It was officially recognized by the Constituent Assembly on 24 January 1950.
The song symbolizes unity, devotion, and love for the motherland.
Its spirit still reminds every Indian of the sacrifices made for freedom. The 150-year milestone of Vande Mataram is not just about time passed, it’s about keeping alive the spirit of India’s love, pride and unity that the song has carried for a century and a half.
Our heartfelt salute to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay for gifting the nation such a timeless creation.
Vande mataram. Jai hind.
